Working in close collaboration with Piechota Architecture, Ground Studio carefully reimagined the landscape surrounding an iconic midcentury modern home. The original house – designed in the 1960s by Campbell & Wong – was photographed by renowned photographer Morley Baer and widely published.
The landscape’s distinctive flagstone paving was carefully preserved, while cracked concrete and asphalt were removed to make way for additional planting. Newly planted olives, elms, and madrones cast dappled shade over gathering areas surrounded by resilient grasses and shrubs adapted to California’s summer-dry climate. The design strengthens the connection between the covered deck, fire pit terrace, swimming pool, and pool house – creating a series of intimate outdoor spaces for gathering throughout the day and long into the evening. Movement flows from the house to landscape spaces through large glass openings that inspire a daily life connected to the outdoors.
